Antique Brass 11" Tall Gagar Vessel Pitcher Pot for Water - Made in India

This item was an estate find, so the information I have is through research.

Gagar is a Sanskrit word for gargara or pot. This gagar is a metal pitcher used to carry water from a well or river to store in the home or shop in India in earlier days, say late 18th to early 19th century. This item was made with a small mouth to prevent splashing and a bulbous body to hold a substantial amount of water. Traditional Indian folklore states that water stored and drank from brass vessels meant healthy living.

This vessel was also used as a musical instrument in several folk songs and dances. It was played with both hands with rings worn on all fingers.

This item weighs a hefty 10.12 lbs. before packaging and measures 11” tall x 11” deep x 11” in diameter. The body tapers to a 4 ½” base. The rim measures 5 5/8” in diameter.

Condition: Very Good. This item is unpolished so it will contain some patina, rust, surface scratches, and scuff marks. This item has seen lots of use and its age shows.

This item will be insured at the time of shipment.
