Ammonites are a type of marine cephalopod mollusk from the subclass Ammonoidea.

Their fossils show that the ammonites had spiral striped shells, at the end of which lived a tentacled animal. These sea creatures lived from 400 to 65 million years ago. They became extinct along with the dinosaurs, in the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction event. Their closest living relatives are the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and the Nautilus.

Nine orders of Ammonoidea have been found and identified: five from the Palaeozoic Era and four from the Mesozoic Era.

Evolution   :

Ammonites first appeared during the Early Devonian. They evolved from small, straight-shelled Bactridians, which were early nautiloids. They quickly evolved into a variety of shapes and sizes, including odd shapes such as hairpins.

They faced at least four extinction events, before finally disappearing 65 million years ago. The first event occurred during the Late Devonian. The second occurred during the Lopingium, with only two species surviving the Perem-Triassic extinction event. Species that survived would adapt, evolve and thrive during the Triassic period. At the end of the period, they faced an extinction event, with only one genus surviving. This event marked the end of the Triassic period and the start of the Jurassic period, during which the ammonite population increased once again. They went extinct along with the dinosaurs.

This Ammonite fossil was collected in october 1997 from East Timor of Indonesia (Before its indenpendence in 2002 to become Democratic Republic of Timor Leste). It was found in red shale rock formation intercalated of Permian age (280 ? 225 million years). Almost all of its chambers filled with crystal of calcite.
