Title of the map:

"CARTE DE LA VIRGINIE ET DU MARYLAND Dressée sur la grande carte Angloise de Mrs Josué Fry et Pierre Jefferson, Par le Sr Robert de Vaugondy Géographe."

Large unusual antique copper engraved map of Virginia and Maryland, by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy.

This is a French version of the famous Joshua Fry & Peter Jefferson map of Virginia. The most important 18th century map of Virginia.

It provides a detailed look into pre-Revolutionary War Virginia and Maryland, extending west to the Alleghany Mountains and including Delaware and southern New Jersey. Although the title is in French, virtually the entire map is in English.

With a nice decorative cartouche in colors signed Groux.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786), were the leaders in the cartography on France during the 18th century.

In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy published "The Atlas Universel", one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondy's integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps.

In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer of the king Louis XV.

Gilles often signed maps as "Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name.

The Robert de Vaugondy family were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family.
