Title of the map:

"CARTE REDUITE DES TERRES AUSTRALES Pour servir à l'Histoire des Voyages Par le Sr Bellin Ing de la Marine, De la Société Royale de Londres &. 1753"

Unusual copper engraved map of Australia, by Jacques-Nicolas BELLIN (1703-1772).

This map is one of most famous 18th century maps to depict Australia before the discoveries of Capt Cook during his first voyage from 1768 to 1771.
Australia is rattached to Tasmania (Terre de Van Diemen) in south and Papua New Guinea (Nouv. Guinee) in north.
Along the imaginary eastern coastline we can read: "I suppose that the land of Diemen can join with the land of the Holy Ghost, but this is without proof." There is a partial coastline of New Zealand too, where we can read that the island was discovered by Abel Tasmand in 1642 and there is a speculation that it might be part of a great southern continent.
This is an important map of Australia depicting the interesting theories existing before the exploration of this region at the end of 18th century.
