Origin: Gerard Mercator Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura, was issued in numerous editions.

Gerard Mercator Junior acquired in 1604 to sell the copper plates, the price of 2,000 thalers is mentioned, after he sold them to Cornelis Claesz. Probably the copper plates came into the hands of Jodocus Hondius only after the death of Claesz. in 1609.
After 1620 the publication of the Atlas was continued by Henricus Hondius (1596 -1651), the second son of Jodocus senior.
Various editions appeared, in 1623, 1628 and 1630.

Jodocus Hondius (Latinized version of his Dutch name: Joost de Hondt) (14 October 1563 – 12 February 1612), sometimes called Jodocus Hondius the Elder to distinguish him from his son Jodocus Hondius II, was a Flemish / Dutch engraver, and cartographer.
