Description

This exceptional, fine and impressive antique Edwardian sterling silver photograph frame has a shaped reCtangular form with an offset reCtangular internal window.

The Edwardian photo frame in sterling silver is embellished with impressive embossed decoration depiCting a North American landscape complete with foliage and fir trees to the upper portion.

The embossed decoration also displays the crouching figure of Hiawatha* holding a spear to the lower portion of the impressive design.

The internal window of this exceptional Art Nouveau frame is bordered by embossed spear motifs.

The outer border of this impressive photograph frame is embellished bound pole and sapling motifs** in addition to a single feather motif to the apex of the design.

The lower portion of the shaped sterling silver frame is ornamented with a design resembling stretched material, embellished with embossed text "FEED THE FIRE OF FRIENDSHIP AND THE WINDS WILL FAN THE FLAME".

The lower portion of this Edwardian silver photo frame bears the registration number "428521" in addition to the full hallmarks.

This antique Edwardian photo frame in sterling silver is fitted with an impressive, original oak frame back and hinged strut, securing with two swivel catches.

*Hiawatha, who was also known by the names Ayenwathaaa and Aiionwatha, was a pre-colonial Native American leader and chief of the Onondaga tribe. He taught navigation, medicine, arts and agriculture and has been featured in many works of literature, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow"s "Song of Hiawatha" (1855).

** These materials were used by the Onondagas, the Mohawks, the Cayugas and other times to construCt bark homes known as ganoñhsésgeh, or longhouses.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the Art Nouveau silver frame are all very clear.
