Left the Waal river right In the foreground, two Spanish cannons. Loevestein Castle is a medieval castle built by the knight Dirc Loef van Horne (Count of Holland) between 1357 and 1397.
In the Eighty Years' War, the revolt of the Dutch against the Spanish rule, the castle was conquered in 1572 by the Beggars under William I of Orange. In 1621 Hugo de Groot managed to pull off a daring escape in a book chest. The idea for this escape came from his wife Maria van Reigersberg.

Frans Hogenberg (1535–1590) was a Flemish and German painter, engraver, and mapmaker.
In 1568 he was banned from Antwerp by the Duke of Alva and travelled to London, where he stayed a few years before emigrating to Cologne.
