Mattress, mattress - a removable element of a bed or sofa, providing a soft and warm place to lie and sit.
The spelling of the word "mattress" comes from him. Matratze, "mattress" - from the Netherlands. matras. In Dahl's dictionary, the word is written with the letter "c" at the end, in the more modern Ozhegov's explanatory dictionary the word "mattress" is indicated, and in the interpretation of the word "mattress" is also indicated.
Currently, both options are equally valid, but newer dictionaries are increasingly leaning towards the "mattress" option as the main one.
Before the invention of mattresses (about 5 thousand years ago), mankind used branches and animal skins to soften the beds. The first cotton mattresses appeared in Mesopotamia, Egypt and Babylon around the 30th century BC. e. Ancient mattresses were made of cotton, although around the 17th century B.C. e. first water beds appeared in Persia (eng.) rus. in the form of bags made of goat skins filled with water.
Mattress technology changed little until the 19th century, when, after the invention of steel springs for stuffing chair seats (1853), in 1871 H. Westphal (German: Heinrich Westphal) patented in Germany the use of these springs in mattresses. Almost simultaneously, the water bed was re-invented: in 1873, D. Paget used these beds to prevent bedsores at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. By 1895, waterbeds were sold in stores, but did not become popular until the 20th century, when vinyl was invented.
Polyurethane foam, invented in Germany in 1937, began to be used in mattresses in the US in the 1950s. Polyester for mattress covers was introduced by DuPont in 1959.
