Britannia Pewter Teapot

Description

Georgian style ribbed pedestal teapot with a hinged lid holding a flower-shaped wooden finial. The handle is curved ebony colored wood set into ornate caps of Britannia pewter. The base is stamped "Leonard Reed & Barton ." The number 3500 designates the style and the number 6 the number of cups.

Notes

Britannia pewter was discovered in the 1700's in England by adding antimony to the alloy compound used to make pewter. This made a stronger, lighter metal that was easier to work with. The use of Britannia in America did not occur until the early 1800's.
