Solid copy.; A revision of the author's thesis, Indiana University, 1971, entitled: Agrarian policies of the Chinese Soviet Republic, 1931-1934. "By confiscating and redistributing landlords' and rich peasants' land among the poor masses, the Communists gained initial support from the masses. Through the implementation of their land reconstruction program, the Communists then helped the peasants increase their income, and at the same time increased the resources of the Government's own revenue. By first improving peasants' income and later transferring this increase into government revenue through various extraction programs, the Communists were able to obtain the necessary sources and minimize the amount of political alienation caused by economic extraction. Even though the Communists were eventually defeated, the fact that the Soviet regime lasted three long years under the severe and constant attack of Nationalist troops suggests that the regime was able politically and militarily to mobilize the peasant population and economically extract large quantities of rural resources. The present study attempts to describe the process by which the series of agrarian programs were implemented and to analyze the extent of their success or failure in achieving the Communist goal of obtaining political support and economic extraction simultaneously from the peasants." ; The Modern Chinese Economy; Ex-Library; Vol. 27; 365 pages.
