This is a Amazing beautiful and rare antique bronze medal with high reliefs of Portuguese navigator and explorer Diogo Cão.
D. João II sent Diogo Cão in 1482, on a maritime expedition that went to the estuary of the Zaire River – Congo, in April 1483, in 1485 placed the first stone pattern marking the Portuguese presence, it is from this symbolic act that the lands baptized with the name of Santa Maria come to belong to the Kingdom of Portugal and began the work of building a church that would be consecrated to the Virgin Mary. The King of Portugal was appointed King John I of the Congo, D. João II of Portugal.
This medal was made by the S. Machado.
The medal as 10 cm  x 7.5 cm, 7 to 10 mm thickness, and weighs 405 grams.
Excellent condition.
