The Mitrailleuse Darne is a French aircraft machine gun developed by Darne in 1916. In the interwar period and during the Second World War, it was in service with the national air force, and was also exported.
In 1915, the Darne arms company of Saint-Étienne received an order from the French government for the production of .303 British caliber Lewis machine guns, of which 3266 were produced over the following years.
In the following year, 1916, the company began to develop a new model of a belt-fed machine gun designed for mass production, that is, structurally simplified and without the excessive finishing typical of weapons of that period. This approach also made it possible to significantly reduce the cost of the product with characteristics that were not particularly inferior to those of that time.
The French army tested Darne mle 1918 in 8 mm Lebel in 1917-1918, but until the end of the First World War, the company was unable to secure the signing of contracts for its supply.
Over the following years, the military department was offered both this machine gun as a light and aviation machine gun (for letnabs and gunners), and firing through the Mle 1919 propeller disk with a synchronizer, machine guns Mle 1922, Mle 1923 and some other samples, however, from all of the items listed for service only the Mle 1922 (in .303) was accepted.
