McDonnell-Douglas F-15 Eagle Designed to gain air superiority.
The development of the aircraft was completed in 1972; commissioned in 1976. Used in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and Yugoslavia. The F-15 Eagle will remain in the US Air Force until 2025.
The first, most preliminary, studies of the appearance of the fourth generation fighter began in the United States back in 1962, when the Republic F-105 Thunderchief was considered the most modern production tactical aircraft of the US Air Force. These works were purely exploratory in nature and did not result in any specific program.
In 1965, when the Vietnam War was still gaining momentum, the US Air Force, as part of the FX (Fighter Experimental) research program, began a more detailed study of the possibility of creating a new generation of tactical fighter. The FX aircraft was intended to replace the F-4C, F-4D and F-4E air superiority fighters, as well as the F-10 IB, F-102 and F-106 interceptors.
The design of the aircraft according to the specified requirements began in 1969. Further work on the FX program has progressed with McDonnell-Douglas, North American, Northrop and Republic.
