California as an Island Map by Johan Michael Probst.

MINT CONDITION, COLORFUL map from the 19th Century of the highly sought after California as an island depiction. It even has the incorrectly spelled Mondocino.

Please Note - In the photos there are some shadows on the close-up photos. There is actually no discoloration on the map. The map is in pristine condition with beautiful, rich coloring.

Based on a map from 1730 originally produced by Matthew Seutter, but after his death the plates were acquired by the publishing family Probst in Augsburg. They subsequently began to use the plates obtained from Seutter’s estate under his name for their own publishing products and would colorize the maps as well. There are three Probst brothers, so they all had access to the same plate however, they each colorized different than the other. This is not a photographic print. It is an actual plate print that was filled in with color (the ink is raised on the paper). Another one of these maps was even featured on a famous reality show of a pawn store in Las Vegas. Google the TV episode of California as an island map on that pawn TV show. (P_wn Stars).

There is a handling fee that I have added that will be used to require a signature and also insurance for the full cost of the map. Photos are part of the description so please make sure to look at them and ask any questions that you have before purchasing. All sales final. Thank you for looking!
