Charles Pigeon (1838-1915) became known for his oil lamps. At the end of the 19th century there was a great need for safe lighting, especially for vintners cellars,  and Charles developed a non-explosive  portable oil lamp. The lamp states that if the lamp exploded, one would be entitled to 10,000 Francs. In 1884 he patented the lamp and in 1900 he presented the lamp at the World Exhibition in Paris.
