Brewster F2A Buffalo
Designed as a carrier-based fighter, he won the main fame in the land version in the service of the Finnish Air Force. A batch of 44 American-made Brewster fighters (the export version had a factory index B-239) was purchased by Finland during the Winter War, but before its end, only six of them managed to take part in it. The main part of the aircraft entered service after the armistice. Buffalo were in service with the Finnish Air Force during the Second World War, or as it was called in Finland, the "Continuation War". The aircraft was recognized as the best Finnish fighter of the Second World War and entered in the Guinness Book of Records in two positions at once:
for the entire duration of the war, Brewster fighters shot down 477 (which is highly doubtful) enemy aircraft (that is, an average of almost 11 victories for each Brewster);
on a single fighter with tail number BW-393, 41 enemy aircraft were shot down during the war.
It was on Brewster fighters that the famous Finnish aces I. Juutilainen (94 victories in 437 air battles) and Hans Henrik Wind (75 victories in 302 air battles) fought.
The export model was deprived of a landing hook and a rescue boat (located behind the headrest), and the lower cockpit glazing was replaced with an aluminum panel as unnecessary. They also installed a pneumatic tail wheel instead of a solid rubber one. The Wright Cyclone XR-1820-G1 engine (850 hp) was replaced with a more powerful R-1820-G5 (950 hp). In addition, automatic radio compasses were installed on them, 12.7 mm American machine guns were replaced with German 13.2 mm caliber, telescopic sights were replaced with collimator gyro-stabilized Revi C12.
