This is a 3 x 5 index card by Frederick "Fred" Luderus, a first baseman who played for the Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies.
The reverse of the 3 x 5 has Mr. Luderus' name and return address in his cursive: "F. Luderus 3041 W. Juneau Ave Milwaukee 8 Wis" and the obverse has, in his writing, "Fred Luderus Phila. Natl. League Club 1910-1920". In handwriting that is not his, the original collector wrote in black ink, "Frederick W. Luderus Chicago Cubs 1909-1910 and Philadelphia Phils 1910-1920." The reverse has the name and return address that was cut out from an envelope and taped to the index card. The reverse has a notation by an unknown hand, "1886-1961". The shadow of the tape that was used to affix the name and return address to the reverse can be discerned on the obverse.
Mr. Luderus (1885-1961) was a member of the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies team that won the National League pennant. He was the first Phillie to hit a home run in the World Series. He hit .438 in that World Series, and in his major league career he compiled a .277 batting average and a .986 fielding percentage.
The autographs were authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA and given a certification number of 84510514.
Also included is a black and white postcard, age unknown, of Mr. Luderus in a batting pose, with the imprint in the lower right-hand corner, "Fred Luderus 1st B Phila. Nationals". The reverse of the postcard has a pencil notation, "1910-1920".
