Description: Fine hand colored woodcut of the Barbary town Tunis,
Bab el Bahr is the main gate to the old city of Tunis and was built in the early 16th century by the Ottoman governor, Khayr al-Din.
It is a large, ornate gate that leads into the medina (old city) and is flanked by two large towers.

The city was founded by the Berber tribe of Banu Hilal in the 9th century and soon became an important center of trade and commerce.
The Ottomans built a number of fortifications in and around the city to defend it from potential invaders.

Cartographer / Mapmaker: Sebastian Munster (1488-1552)
Sebastian worked as a lecturer at the University of the Franciscan Order in Tübingen, where he studied astrology to the famous astronomer Johannes Stöffler. in addition to his main work, the Cosmographia.
