2017/10/13 68min.

Norwegian extreme metal band Enslaved will release their 14th album "E"! the work!

Enslaved is a Norwegian extreme metal band. Over the course of their long career spanning more than a quarter of a century, they have transformed their musicality into something progressive/avant-garde. is also a pioneer of

Enslaved was formed in 1991 by Ivar Bjornsson (G,Key) and Gruutre Cersson (Ba,Vo). At this time Gruutre was 17 years old, and Ivar was 13 years old. (By the way, the drummer at this time was named K. Yonny, but this person was Turim Torson later. Turim left Enslaved in 1995 and joined Emperor.)

The second demo "Yggdrasill" (1992) made Enslaved's name known to the underground. This cassette presents a new style of music called symphonic black metal with synthesizers, which was almost unheard of at the time. It stunned underground metal fans around the world. That is not all. Musically, Enslaved could be called black metal, but its ideology had nothing to do with Satanism. Their theme was Norse mythology, and they sang it in Old Norse. Enslaved was the brainchild of a concept that is now commonplace, especially in Viking metal, where a Norse band sings Norse mythology in their native language. Eva was only 14 at the time. No other person at his age has created a work that changed the history of extreme metal. And both musically and philosophically. He is definitely a genius.

EP "Hordanes Land" released in 1993 was also announced as a coupling with Emperor's debut EP. This split CD was the first work that made the musical form of symphonic black metal widely known to the world. Synthesizer is now one of the standard instruments of extreme metal, but it's only because of Enslaved and Emperor. His 1994 debut album, Vikingligr Veldi, was released on Deathlike Silence Productions, the label of former Mayhem guitarist Euronymous. At the time this work was released, Euronymous was already deceased. Also in 1994, just six months after the release of the debut album, the second album "Frost" was released from France's Osmose Productions.

Enslaved basically believed in symphonic black metal, but from around 1997's third album "Eld", they gradually began to devote themselves to progressive rock. 4th "Blodhemn" in 1998, 5th "Mardraum: Beyond the Within" in 2000, 6th "Monumension" in 2001, and 7th "Below the Lights" in 2003. Not only did it become more prominent, with more clean vocals, but iconic prog instruments such as the Mellotron also appeared. After leaving his longtime partner Osmose Productions, Tabu Recordings released his 8th album "Isa" (2004) and 9th album "Ruun" (2006), which could be described as a black metal version of Pink Floyd. Established their own progressive metal style. The 10th "Vertebrae" (2008) released under contract with Nuclear Blast, the largest extreme metal world, won the Spellemann Award in their home country Norway. After that, 11th "Axioma Ethica Odini" (10 years), 12th "RIITIIR" (12 years), 13th "In Times" (15 years), originality that can only be described as "avant-garde Norwegian metal" Constantly presenting high-quality works overflowing. In 2016, it is still fresh in our memory that we performed in Japan for the first time at Loud Park.

And the 14th album "E" will be released this time. This work is exactly what Gr?thre said, "completely discarding the concept of 'normal' composition, and removing all existing frameworks, boundaries and rules." Weird time signatures, weird chord progressions, and crazy song developments are commonplace. Even guitars like minimal music jump out, beautiful vocal harmonies and black metal screams clash, and most of the songs are 8-10 minute masterpieces. Their progressive spirit is exploding more than ever before. No, if you respect Ivar's words, "The prog scene has a conservative side, so if possible, please call it avant-garde."

The title "E" is very simple. The rune "Ehwaz", which corresponds to the 'E' in the alphabet, is written with the letter 'M', which means 'horse'. (This is because the letter "M" looks like a horse.) The horse, which has been a partner of mankind for many years, represents "trust" and "cooperation", and the simple title "E" has the meaning of "symbiosis". The concept is included. And, of course, the 'E' stands for Enslaved.

This work is also the debut work of the young 21-year-old keyboardist Haakon Vinje. Younger than Enslaved (Enslaved is in its 26th year of formation!), there is no doubt that they have breathed new life into the band. In addition to Einar Kvitrafn Selvik from the Norwegian folk-ambient group WARDRUNA from the same country, a variety of guests such as flute players and jazz saxophone players also participate in this work. A quarter of a century after their formation, Enslaved are still looking for something new. "E" is arguably the most avant-garde work in Enslave's history. A must-listen masterpiece for all extreme metal fans, as well as fans of progressive rock and avant-garde music.
