DE L'ISLE Géographe de l'Académie Royale des Sciences, A PARIS chez DEZAUCHE, Successeur des Srs Delisle et Buache, Rue des Noyers, Avec Privilege du Roy, Revue et Corrigé en 1772."

Large antique copper engraved map of the British Isles, by Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726) and Philippe Buache, revised and edited by Dezauche.

This map has taken infomations from Speed for England and Wales, Pont for Scotland, and Petty for Ireland. At the bottom we can see the coasts of the Netherlands, Belgium, and northern France, and at the upper right, the southern part of Norway.

Some important fishing banks in the North Sea are shown, and De Kimmen ou le Borneur traces what is now known to be the edge of the European continental shelf.

The note at lower left explains that De L’Isle doubts the existence of the islands of Brasil and Assmanda, which appeared on earlier maps.

A large nice cartouche showing mermen, fishing nets, sea birds, and sea monsters, surmounted by Neptune. Another decorative cartouche contains five distance scales flanked by hunting dogs.
