General Dynamics F-111 (Eng. General Dynamics F-111) is an American two-seat long-range tactical bomber (in the FB-111 modification - a strategic bomber), tactical support aircraft, the first production aircraft, on which a variable sweep wing was first introduced, turbojet bypass engines with afterburners, terrain following radar.
On July 27, 1996, at a ceremony dedicated to the withdrawal of these aircraft from the US Air Force, the unofficial name of the F-111 - Aardvark (Aardvark) was legalized.
The aircraft that were in service with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) had the unofficial nickname Pig (Pig).
Work on the development of the F-111 began in 1962, when General Dynamics Corporation, in collaboration with another aviation company, Grumman Aircraft, were selected as developers of a tactical fighter with variable wing geometry. The original contract called for the production of 23 aircraft, including 18 F-111As for the US Air Force and five F-111Bs for the US Navy (the Navy canceled its order during the course of the project). The first prototype was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-1 engines and made its first flight on December 21, 1964, and already during the second flight on January 6, 1965, the wing was retracted and released over a full range of angles from 16 to 72.5 degrees .
