I call this kind of shelf a Gallery Shelf.  You can put framed pictures in the grove and lean them up against the wall and change them out without more holes in the wall.   The grove could also be used for china.  Or you do not have to use the grove at all and just decorate the shelf with a small potted plant, books, candle holders or your collectables.   A shelf gives the wall texture and interest.
