1847 large cent counter stamped JA Bolen.

The story of the Bolen counter stamps is, according to Neil Musante in his book on John Adams Bolen, that sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s, Boston coin dealer Maurice Gould was contacted by Ms. Tingley, possibly in regard to authentication and valuation of the 1804 dollar. Gould was able to purchase from the family a number of letter punches, hubs, dies carvings and other items. One unsourced story goes that unbeknownst to Gould, a second Boston dealer borrowed his name punches, created the counter stamps, and then sold them back to Gould as a prank. This included one struck on an 1803 large cent. Whether Gould ever knew the facts surrounding their origin is unknown. They are listed by Rulau as MaSp10 and 12, but are most likely not contemporary to Bolen.
