When looking at Indiana glass, examine the glass closely to determine the age of the glass, observe the clarity, look for defects, bubbles, straws and irregularities. These glasses have very slight mold lines and very slight irregularities. The newer glass will be much clearer, crisp, with insignificant mold lines, and brighter clarity. Indiana Glass Company has a long and colorful history. In 1895, a building intended to construct and repair railroad cars was purchased and became Brady Glass Company producing glass lamps, glass chimney tops, vases and some household glass. Oil glass lamps were in high demand prior to the widespread electrification of America. The company prospered. The location, in Indiana, near the center of the growing United States, had a source of clean sand and abundant energy readily available for the glass factories. Later the company was merged with National Glass. The Indiana Glass Company was born probably in the early 1900’s. We all know that the Indiana Glass Company made pressed and blown glassware, all in high demand. They continued to make lamps and press molded decorative plates and bowls. Now by 1914, Indiana Glass expanded with the demand and was manufacturing tableware, jellies, tumblers, goblets, lamps, stemware, bar goods, decorated tableware and novelties and industrial glass items. Depression glass was produced by Indiana Glass in the 1930’s. As World War II approached Indiana Glass helped in the war effort by making industrial glass items that were needed for the war. Then in 1957, the Lancaster Glass Corporation purchased the Indiana Glass Company. Lancaster Glass owned several glass companies including Colony Glass. Indiana Glass generated many new and very successful glassware lines and colors in the 1960's. In 1983, Lancaster Colony bought the historic Fostoria Glass Company. This pattern, the Whitehall, was produced by Fostoria with the same original Indiana molds. Some of the Fostoria molds were purchased for the Indiana Glass Co. and reproduced for the Tiara Line. Tiara was a retail company that marketed Indiana Glass items. At the same time they bought some of the old Federal Glass molds and Imperial molds and these were used for Tiara reproductions. Indiana Glass utilized molds and patterns that were successful earlier in the 20th century, a very smart move. Throughout the 1990's, Indiana Glass made glasses for beverage companies. This was a very profitable venture. They also supplied large retailers with many of their glass items such as vases and candleholders. Today Indiana Glass items are highly sought after by kitchen users and collectors alike. This is your opportunity to own a piece of history, an item made in the USA by American Workers!
