Title of the map:

"L'ASIE Suivant les dernieres observations des MOSCOVITES, A PARIS Chez Crepy rue S. Jacques a S. Pierre pres la rue de la parcheminerie 1774"

Large unusual antique copper engraved map of Asia, by Jean-Baptiste Crépy (1730 -1796).

An allegorical cartouche, copied on a copper engraved view of Huquier from Lajoue.

On the right, a panel presents the divisions of Asia, both political and religious.

On the map, we can read that "Yesso’s Land is here detached from our continent". Yesso’s Land is the result of Maerten Gerritsz Vries' confusion when he travelled in northern Japanese waters. In fact, it was the island of Hokkaido. Its representation varies from a small island to a whole container.  The myths surrounding this island may be related to Father Francis Xavier (1506-1552), one of the first Jesuit missionaries in Japan and China. The latter said that huge silver mines were located on an isolated Japanese island. The rumors became so strong that Abraham Ortelius put a silver island in northern Japan on his 1589 Pacific map.
