Klipsch T5 II True Wireless ANC (McLaren Edition) with wireless charging mat.

Noise-canceling earbuds with a premium Formula 1 look

This special edition of Klipsch's T5 II noise-canceling true wireless earbuds celebrates their partnership with the McLaren racing team. I recently took these premium, sweatproof earbuds for a test drive. Their streamlined design and striking color scheme were inspired by the Formula 1 powerhouse. They offer active noise cancellation for removing loud distractions, and the sound is pure Klipsch.

Music plays wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.0, a strong, reliable version of Bluetooth. And powerful antennas in each earbud ensure a more stable connection for playing music or making calls with your phone. Plus, you can use both earbuds together or one at a time — I often popped the left one in so I could listen to a podcast in the morning while I prepared coffee and breakfast.

Easy, one-button controls and a mobile app for more

On each earbud there is a button to push for control over music, calls, and the level of noise cancellation. While touch controls have become the trend, I actually prefer Klipsch's approach. Since I can't see earbuds when I wear them, it makes it easy to know where to push — and I like having the clear, satisfying feedback when I click the button.

Clicking the left earbud button allows you to toggle between noise cancellation and Transparent mode. The latter uses the built-in mics to pick up external sounds and voices, so you can be better aware of your surroundings without removing the earbuds. You can download the free Klipsch Connect app for Apple® or Android™ and get further control over the level of noise you let in.

Newly designed drivers for clear, powerful sound

Klipsch and McClaren both work closely with "high-performance drivers," and that's certainly the case with the T5 II ANC. Under the hood, Klipsch uses a single 5.8mm driver in each earbud. They re-tooled their ultra-thin diaphragm so that it can move, start, and stop with piston-like speed. It's all to serve up Klipsch's famous dynamic sound — high on detail, low on distortion — with a nice helping of bass.

Large collection of ear tips for patented comfort

Klipsch includes six different sizes of their patented oval ear tips with the T5 II ANC. These soft silicone earbud covers slide in easily to keep the earbuds stable and secure while you move.

I visited Klipsch's headphone lab a few years back, and I saw firsthand how much work and time they put into developing and engineering these oval tips. Their research goes back decades and the design is ever-improving. I find they avoid pressure points and create one of the best seals out there — crucial for noise cancellation and for getting solid bass response.

Super-durable charging case banks 21 hours of power

These earbuds offer up to five hours of battery life with noise cancellation and seven hours without. That's on par for true wireless earbuds. Plus, the case banks an extra 21 hours of power to recharge on the go.

It snaps open and closed in one hand like a thick Zippo lighter, and this version has some nice McLaren design touches. There's a tactile tire tread pattern lining its parimeter, and the front and back are covered in carbon fiber, all punctuated by the iconic yellow "papaya" racing stripe. When you need to recharge the case itself, just place in on the included wireless Qi charging pad.
