It’s Smart To Be Proactive!
The best way to keep your aquarium clean is to maintain good water quality. This will keep your fish strong and vibrant, as well as preventing disease.
How Do I Maintain A Healthy Environment?

It is important to test your aquarium water weekly to verify good quality in addition to a bi-weekly partial water change of no more than 25% to help reduce toxic buildup, remove debris the filter missed, and replenish the oxygen available to fish.

Feed Your Fish Daily
Feed your fish twice daily only the amount of food they can eat in 2 to 3 minutes depending on the species. Some fish such as bottom feeders and algae eaters will need up to 30 minutes to 2 hours. Overfeeding & low quality nutrition cause unconsumed food and more excrement which cloud water and raise harmful ammonia levels, possibly leading to fish loss. Take time to observe fish and the water temperature to ensure they are active & healthy.

Test Water Quality Weekly
An aquarium is a closed environment and in order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. The 5 common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH - all of which may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API MASTER TEST KITS or API 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS. It is also a good time to add API STRESS ZYME to keep your aquarium & gravel clean.

Change 25% Water Every 2 Weeks
In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API STRESS COAT.

Restore Your Ecosystem Monthly
It is important to change your filter media & clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API QUICK START to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.

API Ammonia Test Kit for Freshwater & Saltwater Aquarium 130-Test Kit

Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. Fish continually release ammonia into the aquarium through their gills, urine and solid waste. Uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to the water. Small amounts of ammonia stress fish; large amounts of ammonia kill fish. Ammonia is the #1 killer of freshwater fish. The API AMMONIA TEST KIT for freshwater and saltwater squariums contains two liquid dropper bottles, easy-to-read instructions with information on how to test and correct unsafe water conditions, two colour charts and glass test tube with snap-tight cap. This test kit reads ammonia levels from 0 to 8 mg/L. Use the API API AMMONIA TEST KIT several times a week for 4-6 weeks when you start a new aquarium, and then use it weekly for monitoring or when problems occur. This aquarium test kit is for use in freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water to be tested, or to the line on the tube. Add 8 drops from ammonia test solution bottle #1, holding the dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniform drops. Next, add 8 drops from ammonia test solution bottle #2, holding the bottle the same way as bottle #1. Cap the test tube and shake vigorously for 5 seconds, then wait an additional 5 minutes for color to develop. Read the test results by comparing the color of the solution to the appropriate ammonia color card (either freshwater or saltwater). The tube should be viewed in a well-lit area against the white of the card. The closest match indicates the level of ammonia in the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after use. Do not pour test tube contents back into aquarium or pond.

API Calcium Test Kit for Saltwater Aquarium 1-Count Test Kit

Keep your aquatic life healthy and thriving by testing your aquarium water's calcium levels regularly with this easy-to-use API CALCIUM TEST KIT for aquariums.Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. Calcium is one of the most important elements in a reef aquarium. Reef invertebrates such as corals, crustaceans, mollusks and even some types of encrusting algae need calcium to grow and remain healthy. Over time, calcium levels drop as invertebrates use calcium in aquarium water. The API CALCIUM TEST KIT measures calcium levels as low as 20mg/L. It contains two calcium test bottles, capped glass test tube, and instructions & colour card. For use in reef aquariums.

Monitoring calcium levels is essential for keeping a successful reef aquarium. Corals and reef invertebrates, such as shrimp, crabs, mollusks, and encrusting algae require calcium to grow and remain healthy. The calcium level drops as it is used by invertebrates or as it reacts with excess phosphate. Having an adequate calcium level is not enough to achieve healthy coral growth, because the growth of corals is linked to carbonate hardness (often referred to as KH or alkalinity). All reef organisms rely on the combination of calcium and carbonate to build their skeleton structure by extracting these substances from saltwater. These two building blocks are essential for the growth of corals, crustaceans, mollusks, and coralline algae, so testing for both calcium and carbonate hardness is necessary for successful reef keeping. Note: reef aquariums should have a calcium concentration between 400 to 500 mg/L (ppm).

Copper is often used to treat parasitic infections on fresh and saltwater fish. To be effective, the copper concentration in the aquarium must be maintained at the therapeutic level for several weeks. Frequent testing is required to monitor the level. Copper should not be used in aquariums with invertebrates, including snails, shrimp, crayfish, and corals, as well as in aquariums or ponds with plants. This test kit reads the level of total copper (free and chelated) in parts per million (ppm) which are equivalent to milligrams per liter from 0 – 4.0 ppm. Chelated copper compounds are very stable and will remain in solution for long periods of time. Free copper levels will decline rapidly and must be tested daily.

API Freshwater Master Test Kit Liquid pH Ammonia Nitrite Nitrate for Fish Tank

Why be proactive with water treatments?
A natural pond has a constant supply of fresh water flowing into it, such as from a stream or spring. Water also flows out of a natural pond, taking fish waste and other toxins with it. This isn’t true for most garden ponds as they are closed systems. Garden ponds also tend to be much smaller than natural ponds, so they do not offer the amount of water per fish that you find in nature. For these reasons, water treatments are necessary to keep water conditions safe for both fish and plant life and for clearer water.
Following specific steps each season allows you to create a backyard retreat you’ll enjoy all year long! For more information about what’s needed each season, check out more below.

Keep your fish healthy and thriving by testing your aquarium water's GH levels regularly with this easy-to-use API GH & KH TEST KIT for freshwater aquariums. Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. Water hardness is a measure of the dissolved mineral content of water. There are two types: the general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH). When keeping freshwater fish and plants, the GH and the KH of aquarium water should match their natural habitat.  The API GH & KH TEST KIT helps aquarists duplicate the natural habitat of their fish, as well as detect low KH levels, which can lead to rapid and wide pH shifts, stressing fish. API GH & KH TEST KIT contains KH test bottle, GH test bottle, instructions with colour card, and two capped glass test tubes.

Nitrate is produced in the aquarium by the biological filter. Beneficial bacteria in the biological filter convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into nitrate. A high nitrate level indicates a build-up of fish waste and organic compounds, resulting in poor water quality and contributing to the likelihood of fish disease. Maintaining a low nitrate level improves the health of fish and invertebrates. Excessive nitrate also provides a nitrogen source that can stimulate algal blooms. Aquarium water should be tested for nitrate once a week to ensure the nitrate does not reach an undesirable level. This test kit reads total nitrate (NO3) level in parts per million (ppm) which are equivalent to milligrams per liter from 0 – 160 ppm.

API pH Test Kit for Freshwater Aquarium 150-Test Kit

Keep your fish healthy and thriving by testing your aquarium water's pH regularly with easy-to-use API pH TEST STRIPS for freshwater aquariums. Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. pH is the measure of acidity of water, on a scale ranging from 0 to 14. A pH of 0 is the most acidic, while a pH of 14 is the most alkaline. Different geographies have different tap water conditions with different pH levels, while fish require a specific pH level to thrive. A pH of 7.0 is ideal when keeping a community aquarium containing a variety of tropical fish. Goldfish and livebearers prefer a pH of 7.5. Many Amazonian fish, like angelfish and neon tetras, prefer a pH of 6.5 to 6.8. Mollies and swordtails thrive at pH 7.2 to 7.5. API pH TEST STRIPS for freshwater aquariums test a wide range of pH levels from 6.0 to 9.0. Just dip a strip directly into your aquarium, and use the colour-coded chart to determine if your water is safe or if adjustments are needed. Then follow the recommendations to treat the water – it's that simple!

API Freshwater pH Test & Adjuster Kit Deluxe

Directions: push down on cap while turning to remove childproof safety cap. Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water to be tested (to the line on the tube). Add 3 drops of pH test solution, holding dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops. Cap the test tube and invert tube several times to mix solution. Read the test results by comparing the color of the solution to the pH color card. The tube should be viewed in a well-lit area against the white area of the card. The closest match indicates the pH of the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after use. A pH of 7.0 is ideal when keeping a community aquarium containing a variety of tropical fish. Goldfish and livebearers prefer a pH of 7.5. Many Amazonian fish, like angelfish and neon tetras, prefer a pH of 6.5 to 6.8. Mollies and swordtails thrive at pH of 7.2 to 7.5. To raise or lower pH in a freshwater tank, use API pH UP or pH DOWN. To automatically adjust pH to a preset level, use API PROPER pH 6.5, 7.0, or 7.5.

API Phosphate Test Kit for Freshwater & Saltwater Aquarium 150-Test Kit

Keep your fish healthy and thriving by testing your aquarium water's PO4 3- levels regularly with this easy-to-use API PHOSPHATE TEST KIT for freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. Phosphate enters the aquarium from fish and invertebrate waste and decaying organic matter, such as dead algae and uneaten fish food. Excess phosphate contributes to unsightly algae and green water blooms. In saltwater, excess phosphate can inhibit the growth of hard corals. API PHOSPHATE TEST KIT for freshwater and saltwater aquariums contains two phosphate test bottles, test kit instructions, one capped glass test tube, and two colour cards to accurately measure phosphate levels in fresh and saltwater aquariums.

Phosphate enters your aquarium from fish and invertebrate waste and decaying organic matter, such as dead algae and uneaten fish food. Water treatment facilities may add phosphate to tap water to prevent pipe corrosion and reduce concentrations of heavy metals in drinking water. Some salt mixes also contain phosphates. Excess phosphate may lead to algae blooms. In saltwater aquariums, phosphate precipitates dissolved calcium and magnesium, inhibiting the growth of hard corals and other reef-building organisms. This test kit reads the total phosphate level in parts per million (ppm), which are equivalent to milligrams per liter from 0 – 10.0 ppm.

•    Contains one (1) API PHOSPHATE TEST KIT 150-Test Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Water Test Kit, including 2 bottles of testing solution, 2 colour cards and 1 glass test tube with cap
•    Reads phosphate levels between 0-10 mg/L
•    Helps monitor and adjust pH and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish and corals
•    Reducing phosphate can help prevent excess and unsightly algae, which can cause fish stress and inhibit the growth of hard corals
•    Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear

API Reef Master Test Kit Aquarium Test Kit 1-Count

Measure the most important reef aquarium levels including calcium, carbonate hardness (KH), phosphate and nitrate with API REEF MASTER TEST KIT. Proper balance is key to the overall health of reef inhabitants. Corals and reef invertebrates like shrimp, crabs and encrusting algae require calcium to grow and proper levels of carbonate hardness to prevent harmful fluctuations in pH. Excess phosphate, which comes from fish waste, uneaten food and other decaying organic matter as well as tap water, can cause algae blooms and affect healthy growth of hard corals. High nitrate levels from fish waste and organic compounds can cause fish disease and algae blooms. The API REEF MASTER TEST KIT comes with four different tests that are specifically calibrated to measure these levels in reef aquariums. Just fill the test tubes, add the test drops and compare results to the colour card. Then follow the recommendations on the card if action is required.
