Woodcut print by unidentified artist printed on japan paper sheet measuring 18 x 24 inches. The style borrows much from Expressionists of the early 20th century, with its visible woodgrain and boldly distorted figure, but also recalls the work of mid-century artists like Arthur Danto. Never framed and in excellent condition.

This was bought as one of a group of four such prints (the others are also listed on my store, unless they have been sold already) that were in the collection of R.C. Bald, an Australian emigre who was a professor of English at the University of Chicago in the 1950s-1960s. The collection also contained work by leading Australian and American artists (ie Norman and Lionel Lindsay), so I am assuming that this print is also the work of a recognized artist. Bald died in 1965, so I am assuming that this piece was produced sometime before that date.
