Norwegian Silver Spoon - Antique Circa 1650

An exceptional antique 17th century Norwegian silver spoon; an addition to our silver teaware collection

Description

This exceptional antique Norwegian silver spoon has an oval rounded shaped form with a narrow stem handle and knopped terminal.

The bowl is ornamented with engraved simplified swag and leaf decoration, in addition to the initials "IHS"*.

The cast silver handle of this antique silver spoon is embellished with a simplified leaf design enveloping the tapering stem accented with a stylised creature to the posterior edge of the bowl.

* IHS comes from the first three letters of the Latinised version "IHSOUS" of the Greek spelling "ΙΗΣΟΥΣ", which translates as the Holy Name of Jesus. Many perceive these initials to delineate the Latin phrase "Iesus Hominum Salvator" meaning "Jesus the Saviour of all Men", which is not historically accurate.

Condition

This 17th century Norwegian silver spoon is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition in keeping with age.

The cast decoration is very sharp and the engraved ornamentation is very crisp.

There are no hallmarks as to be expected with such a piece; the date and origin can be determined by the composition and decoration.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of 17th century silverware.
