This beautiful charismatic American folk art box features hand painted red and white flowers (or fruits) with stenciled old gold leaves against a black background.  All the wood used is hand planed and sawn and it stands on solid bracket feet.  The corners are armored with metal and the folk painting extends onto the metal.  The sides are dovetailed but also secured with metal brackets (also painted with the original paint theme) the box is 12.75" long x 9.5" deep x 6" tall.  It is in good antique condition with no missing parts or breaks. A joint in the top between two pieces of wood is evident under the paint (see top photo s#5 and #6).  I think this is a late 18th c. or early 19th c. walnut box that was decorated and fitted with the metal corners and side brackets some 30 or 40 years later. The work is very similar to the work done on the stenciled and painted chairs of Baltimore c. 1830.
