In good condition. Later rebinding likely mid-19th century. Moderate scuffing to extremities with rubbed corners and joints. Spine ends desiccated with loss of gilt along spine. Armorial bookplate of S. Archibald Stewart of Castlemilk, Baronet  (d.1763) likely the third. Ex-Libris of Clementi Fergusonis of the Royal related Ferguson family on fly. 19th-century hand on flys claiming the date and the edition in red ink. Portrait of Grotius added to the “new” fly. Textblock is nicely preserved with light soiling to title page at margins and minor toning throughout. Free of known marginalia. Rear pastedown has a short bio of Grotius’ life in old 19th-century hand. All edges red. Binding intact. Please see photos. 

A nicely preserved Elzevir imprint of Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) Dutch humanist, diplomat, lawyer, theologian, jurist, poet and playwright. He was imprisoned exiled for his involvement in the intra-Calvinist disputes of the Dutch Republic and wrote his major works while in France.
