This an 1887 N172 baseball card of the Detroit Wolverines' Dennis Joseph "Dan" Brouthers, made by the Goodwin & Company tobacco manufacturer in New York City. It was authenticated by PSA, given a grade of Authentic and encapsulated. The PSA Certification number is 743625340. This set of cards were produced from 1887-1890.

The variation of this card is entitled, Detroit Bat/Ready Over Shoulder. The team name on the card, "Detroits", has been marked out and his next team, Boston, has been written along the bottom.

There is a pinhole in the upper-right-hand corner.

There is what I believe to be a studio stock or negative number, 0505, also in the upper-right-hand corner. The sepia photos for this set were produced by the Hall Studio of New York City and affixed to cardboard stock. Please look at the photographs, there are areas where the photo has separated from the cardboard.

The reverse of the card shows that it was affixed into an album at some point.

The cards in this set are approximately 1 and 1/2" x 2 and 1/2".

These cards were distributed in two brands of Goodwin & Company cigarettes, Old Judge and Gypsy Queens. The backs of the cards are blank.

Dan Brouthers, 1858-1932, was a slugging first baseman who had a lifetime batting average of .342. His career spanned 1879-1896 and then a brief appearance in 1904.

He played for the Detroit Wolverines from 1886-1888 and was a member of the 1887 pennant-winning Wolverines. That team played in the post-season "World Series" against the St. Louis Browns ten games to five.

He was a four-time National League batting champion, led the league in home runs twice, and was the RBI leader in two seasons.

He played in the one year of the Players League's existence, for the Boston Reds, in 1890.

After his playing career, he worked for the New York Giants for almost twenty years.

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.

The Hall of Fame postcard and the Perez Steele postcard, 01798 of 10,000, are included.
