Notes

  • Provenance
  • George Cole & John Roper (1771-1810). Engraved by J. Roper from drawings by George Cole. This set of county maps and town plans were originally intended for publication in "The Beauties of England and Wales" (1804) but were instead first issued in parts as a separate series between 1804 and 1810. These maps were later published in an unchanged form in "The British Atlas" (1810), and Nightingale's "English Topography" in (1816-1820). They were later republished with some alterations in Dugdale's "Curiosities of Great Britain, England & Wales Delineated" (1835-1838) and were replaced in later editions (post 1842) with maps by Joshua Archer. They were finally reprinted by lithographic transfer in "Collins' Railway & Pedestrian Atlas of England" (1858).
  • Engraver
  • John Roper (fl. 1800 - 1825). A line engraver who worked in collaboration with artists and cartographers including George Cole and George Young on the British Atlas which was composed of maps and town plans by Cole and others and engraved by Roper to accompany J. Britton and E. W. Bayley's The Beauties of England and Wales. This was a topographic work published in parts. This work was published in 18 volumes between c.1804 and 1810, which was published as “The British Atlas” in 1810 by Verner, Hood and Sharpe. Roper’s maps were also re-issued to illustrate the Reverend J Nightingale’s “English Topography” of 1816 (and other later editions), published by Baldwin, Craddock and Joy.
