Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress (B-17 "Flying Fortress") - the first serial American all-metal heavy four-engine bomber.
The aircraft began to be designed in 1934 as part of a competition to create a coastal bomber operating against ships. A year later, a prototype Model 299 was created, the first flight of which took place on July 28 of the same year. The Boeing factories developed and produced the B-17 Flying Fortress for the US Air Force exactly 12 months later. In total, the factories produced 6981 B-17 bombers of various modifications (from the experimental Model 299 to the B-17G). At the factories of Douglas and Lockheed, under license, another 5745 aircraft of the B-17F and B-17G modifications were built. The total production of the aircraft amounted to 12,726 units.
