"Intruder" (eng. Intruder - "intruder, intruder", combined arms index - A-6) - American all-weather carrier-based attack aircraft, designed in the late 1950s and in service for three and a half decades.
As a result of the war in Korea, the need to replace the A-1 Skyrader attack aircraft in the US Navy with a modern jet aircraft capable of operating effectively in difficult climatic conditions and at night became obvious. In February 1957, the Fleet Aviation Bureau developed a set of requirements for such an aircraft. The new strike aircraft, in addition to being all-weather, was supposed to have a speed of about 1000 km / h, a combat radius of 560 km, short takeoff and landing, a crew of two. In December 1957, the requirements were sent to eight aircraft manufacturers: Boeing, Douglas, Vought, Martin, Bell, Lockheed, North American, Grumman. A total of 12 projects were submitted at the competition (including the design of a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft by Bell). In April 1959, the Grumman company with its G-128 project was declared the winner of the competition, which received an order for a total amount of about $ 149,269,000 for the manufacture of eight prototypes. Subsequently, after the aircraft was adopted by the fleet, the Grumman company was determined to be the only supplier . A certain influence on the victory of Grumman was that this company had extensive experience in creating carrier-based aircraft and had close ties with the US Navy.
