Sterling Silver and Enamel Punch and Judy Book Vesta Case - Antique Victorian (1886)

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver and enamel Punch and Judy book vesta case; an addition to our range of collectable silver cases

Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver vesta case has been realistically modelled in the form of a book.

The anterior surface of the antique vesta case is ornamented with an impressive rectangular hot enamel panel depicting a scene of Mr Punch* painting his dog, Toby, all below the elucidating title 'Punch'.

The reverse surface of the case is plain and unembellished and the two elongated sides reflect details of the book's spine and pages; the spine bears impressive engraved floral decoration on a matte background.

This 19th century silver & enamel vesta case is fitted with a plain hinged cover, ornamented with further engraved floral decoration.

The underside of the case bears a serrated panel/match striker.

Such examples in this excellent and perfect condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.

* Mr Punch is a pertinent character in the traditional British seaside hand-puppet show Punch and Judy. Mr Pulcinella Punch and his wife Judy re-enact comical classic tales incorporating a wide range of 'guest' characters: the Constable, Joey the clown, the skeleton, Toby the dog etc. Many of these characters fall victim to the violent nature of Mr Punch's club. The enacted story typically involves Punch behaving foolishly, struggling with his wife Judy and the baby, all triumphant over the law whilst incorporating classic jokes and songs.

Condition

This 19th century silver & enamel vesta case is an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition.

The enamel is in perfect condition.

The British hallmarks struck to the side of the case and part hallmarks to the interior of the cover are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique Victorian silverware.
