Heinkel He 51 (German: Heinkel He 51) is a 1930s German Heinkel biplane. A classic biplane, its performance was mediocre. Widely advertised from the very moment of the official announcement of the existence of the Luftwaffe.
Heinkel first showed interest in a single-seat fighter as early as the late 1920s with the development of the HD-37, a single-pillar, mixed-design biplane that laid the foundation for the line of biplanes that led to the He 51.
Work on improving the characteristics of the He 49 aircraft forced the construction of two more prototypes - He 49b (first flight in February 1933) and He 49c with wheeled chassis and an ethylene glycol-cooled BMW-6.0ZU engine (first flight in late spring 1933) and eventually led to the creation of the He 51. The dimensions and design of the aircraft remained almost unchanged, but the details of the He 51 differed markedly from its predecessors. The ailerons on the upper wing were changed and trim tabs were installed. The vertical plumage was completely redesigned. The semi-removable radiator was replaced with a tunnel one. The landing gear became separate V-shaped with oil-spring damping, they and the wheels were covered with fairings, the tail wheel was replaced with a crutch.
The technical department was interested in the He 51, since it really promised world-class performance with the same engine as the Ar 65e fighter. As a result, Heinkel received an order to complete development and start production. Before the end of 1933, work began on nine He 51A-0s in Warnemünde for testing purposes.
