FIAT BR.20 Cicogna (Italian: Fiat BR.20 Cicogna - Aist) is an Italian medium bomber of all-metal construction. Developed by Fiat designers under the direction of Celestino Rosatelli. The aircraft made its first flight on February 10, 1936[1], and was adopted by the Regia Aeronautica in February 1937.
The development of a new high-speed bomber began in 1934 on the instructions of a competition held by the Regio Aeronautica (Air Force of the Kingdom of Italy). The aviation division of the FIAT concern, which presented the BR.20 model, was recognized as the winner. It was a fairly modern bomber with an all-metal fuselage, spaced twin tails and two radial engines. The first prototype flew on February 10, 1936. Already in September of the same year, aircraft called "Cicogna" (stork) began to enter service with the Air Force.
The most massive steel BR.20M differed by a large area of glazing of the bow and steel fuselage skin.
Since 1937, they were used in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the Francoists. The 7th and 13th bomber regiments were based here. During World War II, they were used in operations in Greece, during bombing raids on Malta. It was also used in limited numbers by the Italian Air Corps based in German-occupied Belgium during the Battle of Britain.
