Historical reference

Fiat G.50 Freccia (Italian: Fiat G.50 Freccia, Arrow) is a single-seat Italian fighter aircraft of the Second World War. The aircraft was developed by the Fiat design bureau under the direction of Giuseppe Gabrielli. The G.50 is the first Italian all-metal monoplane fighter with a closed cockpit and retractable landing gear.

In the 30s, the main type of fighter in the Italian Royal Air Force (Regno Aeronautica) was the Fiat CR.32 biplane. In 1939, the new Fiat CR.42 Falco was added to them. But Italian experts understood that the near future was for new types of fighters that were already being developed in the world. The closest example was the latest German fighter Messerschmitt Bf.109 created in 1935. It was already an all-metal monoplane, with a closed cockpit and an in-line engine. The silhouette of the aircraft, especially the hood, resembled a rocket, which gave it excellent aerodynamics. In 1936, Italian aircraft designers began developing a similar aircraft. However, everything rested on the inability of the Italian aircraft industry to create an in-line engine. As a result, the new fighter, designated the Fiat G.50 Freccia (“Arrow”), was equipped with an 840-horsepower radial engine. With. The first prototypes of the aircraft were equipped with closed cockpits, but the Italian pilots, not trusting the Italian designers, insisted that the cockpit be half open.

Serial production was carried out from November 1937 to August 1942. A total of 833 copies were issued. In 1942, it was replaced in production by a further version of the Fiat G.55 Centauro, already with in-line engines of German production and Italian (under a German license).
