Dornier Do 24 is a German three-engine flying boat developed by Dornier Flugzeugwerke for maritime patrol and rescue operations. According to Dornier's records, about 12,000 people were saved by this aircraft during its operation. A total of 279 vehicles of this type were built between 1937 and 1945.
The Dornier Do 24 was designed by the Dutch Navy to replace the Dornier Wal aircraft currently in use in the Dutch East Indies. By design, it was an all-metal monoplane with a wide fuselage and stabilizing sponsons.
Three radial engines located above the wing were used as a power plant. The first two vehicles were equipped with Junkers Jumo 205C diesels with a power of 447 kW (600 hp). The next two are Wright R-1820-F52 Cyclone with 652 kW (875 hp). This was done in order to unify the power plant with Martin 139 aircraft at the request of the Dutch customer. The third Do 24 with Cyclone engines first flew on July 3, 1937. Six machines for the Netherlands were manufactured under the Do 24K-1 index in Germany, while the rest of the series was built under license by Aviolanda already directly in the Netherlands (with the Do 24K-2 index).
