The Curtiss SOC Seagull is an American single-engine reconnaissance and search biplane developed by Alexander Solla of Curtiss-Wright for the US Navy. The aircraft was placed on battleships and cruisers in a seaplane configuration, launched using catapults and rose to the deck after landing on the surface of the water. Had folding wings for more compact storage on the ship. When the aircraft was based on a ground airfield, the float was replaced by an ordinary landing gear with a tail support (English) Russian ..

The company produced 258 SOC aircraft in SOC-1 - SOC-4 variants, starting in 1935. The SOC-3 was the basis for the Naval Aircraft Factory-produced SON-1 modification, delivered to the Naval Aviation in the amount of 64 units starting in 1940.

The SOC was produced for the US Navy beginning in 1933 and entered service in 1935. The first batch consisted of 135 units of the model, followed by 40 units of the SOC-2 model and 83 units of the SOC-3 model. A modification of the SOC-3, known as the SOC-1, was built at the Naval Aircraft Factory.

The first ship to carry a SOC aircraft in November 1935 was the CL-12 "Marblehead". By the end of the decade, the SOC had replaced all previous aircraft throughout the fleet. Aircraft production was completed in 1938. By 1941 it had been replaced by the Vought OS2U Kingfisher on most battleships, and the third modification SO3C Seamew SOC aircraft were deployed on cruisers. SO3C, however, had a too weak engine. Although the SOC was a first generation aircraft, it was used for a long time as an observer and artillery spotter, and to a limited extent as a reconnaissance aircraft.
