The North American F-100 Super Saber is an American single-seat single-engine supersonic fighter, swept-wing fighter-interceptor, fighter-bomber, reconnaissance aircraft.
The first American serial supersonic fighter.
Despite the fact that the first model appeared in the early 1950s, all kinds of improved aircraft modifications are still used around the world. The YF-100 prototype aircraft made its first flight in May 1953, during this flight it broke the sound barrier. During its existence, this multi-role fighter set many records for speed, duration and flight range.
The latest production models of the F-100D and F-100F, in the event of the destruction of the runways, could be launched like missiles - from launchers. The first takeoff of a supersonic aircraft (F-100D Super Saber) without using a runway occurred in 1958 as part of the Zero Length Launch program at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
In addition to a nuclear bomb and four 20 mm cannons, the fighter could carry air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles (for example, 4 infrared-guided AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles).
Two early models of the aircraft ("A" and "C") set the first world speed records on the basis of 15-25 km among supersonic aircraft. In October 1953 Colonel Iverst reached 1215 km/h and in August 1955 Colonel Haynes reached 1323 km/h. Subsequent aircraft models developed a maximum speed of up to 1485 km / h.
