Historical reference

The Tiger Moth was a 1930s biplane developed by de Havilland. Served as primary trainer for the Royal Air Force until 1952.

This machine was used by many other countries for military and civilian purposes. A number of aircraft owned by private owners, various flying clubs and organizations are currently in operation (training, demonstration, entertainment flights, etc.).

In 1927, de Havilland built two small single-seat monoplanes, designated the D.H.71 "Tiger Moth". These aircraft were to participate in the aviation race for the King's Cup. The aircraft were designed for test pilot Schubert Brod. However, during the competition, both aircraft failed, the first was withdrawn from the competition, and the second got into turbulent flows and retired.

In the future, this aircraft, piloted by Brod, set several world records. However, the D.H.71 aircraft suffered a sad fate: the first crashed while preparing for an air race, and the second was destroyed in October 1940 during an air raid.

The success of the civilian Tiger Moth aircraft spurred the development of a military version of the machine, known as the D.H.60 Moth Tiger, based on the D.H.60T Moth Trainer, reinforced to operate at a higher flight weight. Eight pre-production aircraft were built.
