Title of the map:

"A NEW and GENERAL MAP OF THE MIDDLE DOMINIONS BELONGING TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, viz VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, the DELAWARE-COUNTIES, PENNSYLVANIA, NEW JERSEY &c. with the addition of New York, & of the greatest part of New England &c. as also the bordering parts of the British Possessions in Canada. London: Published by Laurie & Whittle, N°53 Fleet Street, as the acts directs, 12th May 1794".

Unusual large antique copper engraved map of the British Colonies in North America, edited by Robert Laurie (1755-1836) and James Whittle (1757-1818), after the Revolution war.

In upper left side, an inset with the lake Superior, the Mississipi and the Alleghany rivers.

This map is taken from Lewis Evan's "A General map of the Middle British Colonies in America…" published in 1755. This impression is Laurie & Whittle's re-issue of the Sayer & Bennet's plate of 1776. In Henry Stevens reference book on Lewis Evans he states that the only difference between the earlier Sayer & Bennett map and this one is the removal of the headline title "The Seat of War" and the addition of a dotted line throughout the lakes to show the boundary of Canada and the United States. Note the outline for the state of Vermont.
