Spikenard Essential Oil is a species in the Valerianaceae family, which grows in the Himalayas, China, India and Tibet. Widely used in the Ayurvedic and Unani traditions of alternative medicine as a neuroprotective agent in the treatment of epilepsy, hysteria, insomnia, and seizures. In studies carried out in rats with rhizomal extract of N. jatamansi, its effect on the central nervous system has been especially studied. It has been shown to possess anticonvulsant activity, antidepressant activity, and neuroprotective effects. Reverses amnesia induced by diazepam and scopolamine (See Pub Med: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3510905/). Its potential to reduce markers of stress, such as elevated plasma corticosterone, gastric ulceration, and increased weight of the adrenal glands and spleen, has been studied. Very useful for improving cognition, alertness and concentration. Spikenard is also used to treat skin disorders and hair loss. It also has antioxidant and anticholinesterase, antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor properties.
