In 1915 a committee was formed to look into development of supporting literature for the merit badge program. Initially, the use of a single volume, similar to the “Boy Scout Tests and How to Pass Them” was considered, but by 1918 the decision was reached to issue a separate pamphlet for each subject.

To secure the level of expertise desired for the content of the pamphlets, the Boy Scouts of America turned to authors recognized as experts in their fields and requested them to volunteer their knowledge. Many did so, creating a library of authoritative information which has been widely used not only by scouts, but by the general public as well.

TYPE "7" PAMPHLETS

Type 7. Full Photo Cover or Bulls-eye Cover (Circa 1966 – 1971). The title of the merit badge is superimposed in white on a full-page photo pertaining to the subject. The illustration of the badge in the lower right-hand corner of the cover is surrounded by a red circle, hence “bulls-eye”. Variations of some titles exist due to cover photo changes.

The BSA changes the design, name, and availability of merit badges depending on various factors such as their popularity, shifts in the focus of the Scouting program, and changes in society. Of the original 57 merit badges from 1911, only 11 are still available that also still have the same basic design motif (Architecture, Art, Athletics, Chemistry, First Aid, Lifesaving, Music, Plumbing, Public Health, Scholarship, and Surveying)

Condition: These books are 50 to 55 years old. They were used by boys at meetings and in the field and show slight wear. They do have troop ID and names on the covers and first pages, they are still in remarkably good condition. See pics. As such, these books are offered "AS IS, NO RETURNS, NO REFUNDS. Priced accordingly.

If you collect BOY SCOUT STUFF, UNIFORMS, MEDALS, PINS, OR LITERATURE you might want to place me in your "FAVORITES" list for the next few months to keep track of these auctions. I have just begun to list similar sets from a collector's hoard dating from the 1920's. I will be listing new lots weekly in the coming months.

This collection belonged to a life-long Scouter who passed away in 2000. He earned his Eagle award about the age of 17, which would make it around 1959 (ish). He spent his life devoted to Scouting serving as Scoutmaster and at Boy Scout summer camps for over 15 years in positions from counselor to eventually camp director.

He was a ten year member and Vice President of the local Volunteer Fire Co., ten year member of the area Hazardous Materials Response Team and the town Tax Payers Association and was an Eagle Scout with Gold & Silver Palms, one of the highest ranks in Scouting.

A bronze palm represents five additional merit badges, a gold palm 10, and a silver palm 15. 1 gold palm and 1 silver palm = 46 total merit badges (21 required + 25 additional)

I cannot divulge his identity because I don't have the family's permission, nor sufficient background information on him.
