MARK MCGWIRE & JOSE CANSECO 1987 Leaf Season Highlights #40 Oakland Athletics.

McGWIRE & CANSECO

Equal A's RBI Marks

September 15

On Sept. 15, 1987, Jose Canseco of the Oakland A's hit a three-run homer to help his team defeat the Texas Rangers, 6-5. Those three RBI gave Canseco 102 for the season. His teammate, rookie Mark McGwire already had 107 by that point in the season which gave the A's two 100-RBI men for only the second time in their Oakland history. The only other season in which two Oakland sluggers achieved 100 RBI apiece in a season was 1969 when Reggie Jackson set the Oakland club record with 118 and Sal Bando chipped in with 113. McGwire, who would go on to succeed Canseco as the American League Rookie of the Year, wound up tying Jackson's club record of 118 RBI.

Canseco, who had 117 RBI as the AL Rookie of the Year in '86, finished the '87 season with 113.
