AU289. AUSTRIA SCHUSCHNIGG PLEBISCITE PROPAGANDA CACHETS COVER MARCH 11, 1938 R!

Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg of Austria received Hitler’s promise to recognize the independence of Austria in the Austro-German Agreement of July 11, 1936 following the assassination of Chancellor Dollfuss. Schuschigg’s period in office was marked by serious outbreaks of violence in different parts of the country. His opposition to Socialists had lost him the support he required against the Nazi’s. Disorders broke out again in Austria on the March 1, 1938 and the government was unable to cope with the situation without offending Nazi Germany. As a last resort, Schuschnigg announced a plebiscite for the March 13, 1938 on the question of independence. Only “Yes” ballots were to be distributed, the “No” voters would have to supply their own ballots. Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg had charity stamps-labels printed in Innsbruck and designed to publicize his own proposed plebiscite. The money collected from their sale went to the election fund. Also the special different propaganda cachets were issued and used them on mail only one day - March 11, 1938. Hitler sent an ultimatum for Schuschnigg to postpone the plebiscite and resign.

The hand stamped propaganda cachet: "With Schuschnigg for a free Austria? Yes!" and “Every Austrian must vote Yes!” for voting for the free Austria and against the Union with Germany during the planned plebiscite have been produced locally and applied on the mail during sorting the mail collected from letter boxes one day only on March 11, 1938. Genuine. Rare.
