French Bourgogne Barrel, Antique wrought-iron oval-shaped oak barrel with handle 19th century, a hole on top for filling and emptying the contents.
This type of small barrel was once used to transport wine or alcohol in the vineyards, or in the fields during harvest or ploughing, so that winegrowers or peasants could quench their thirst.
The handle was used for transport. The barrel could be considered a gourd.
This barrel comes from a winery in Burgundy.
To reuse it today, it would have to be soaked in water to regain its watertightness (the wood having dried out since the 19th century). One of the barrel's blades has old worm holes. Personally, I'd use it for rustic decor...
