Very large antique and very decorative copper engraved World map, by Georges-Louis Le Rouge.

With large allegoric depicting pyramids and lions, an American Indian with a bow and arrows  bottom right, an armillary sphere near Mercury. The title block dedicates the card to Jean-Frédéric Phelypeaux, the Comte de Maurepas.

The map shows the latest information of the end of the 18th century, in particular the explorations to the north and the search for a northwest passage. It shows a passage from Hudson Bay to the Pacific through a series of lakes connected by a river, the West River. The map incorporates the discoveries of Pierre-François-Xavier de Charlevoix in Canada. A continuous waterway from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific is also represented. The map also includes Aleksei Tchirikov’s discoveries on the northwest coast during Bering’s second expedition.

The route of the exploration of the Antarctic by the ships Aigle and Marie is represented in the Atlantic and Indian oceans.  Australia is rattached to Tasmania and New Guinea.
